In 2019, our house was an integral part of the City of Tacoma "Oakland Neighborhood Permeable Pavement Project"

As such, the street in front was reconstructed with permeable pavement, which absorbs water and eliminates the need for gutters, and is more environmentally friendly.

They also planted new trees and sidewalks.

When the Public Works Department replaced the sewer and water mains, they broke ours, and replaced our sewer and water lines from the street to the house.

The City of Tacoma Environmental Services Department received a grant from the Washington State Department of Ecology and has partnered with the Public Works Department to replace Monroe Street, Gunnison Street, and Madison Street with new streets. These new streets were constructed with permeable pavement that will allow the rainwater falling on to the street and soak into the ground. This project is designed to improve water quality from this area entering the Flett Creek Watershed.
